FYP week21 : distribution and concerns

Instagram

The Instagram account was launched way back in February, but I haven’t really pushed it for followers since everything was pretty much still in progress for the past months.

My idea is to color code all different issue: hence issue 1 being neon green, 2 being neon blue ans do on.

The reasons for using Instagram only is that I think I could utilise the layout of the platform:

1st: No speech bubbles are needed for the online version, all speech and wordings could be typed in to the captions section. Not only does it free up space for my panels, but it also allows multi languages to allow the material to be understood by many other countries!

2nd: Instagram posts goes in an order where later panels would appear on the bottom, and one would swipe upwards in seeing new posts. So if I upload say : the cover to issue 1 first, the reader could easily be reading panel from panel as they slide upwards until they’re done.

AirDrop

Sahre with friends, encourage help in spreading material when they are on streets of HK

Even if the new National Security laws clamps down furrther, there is always AirDrop to turn to for safe distribution.

Not only could AirDrop be utilised as distribution, it could also be utilised in serving as a form of advertisement, or random give out for coupons for product purchases.

Reflection

I have had the idea of an Instagram distribution since months ago, but one consideration I missed out on was that I should’ve made the composition of my panels with the intention of them going upwards, instead when I was laying my comic out the “eye flow” was more fitted for a printed version.

Products

The comic is free to view online, my ultimate goal is that the content could gain enough traction and then side products such as the bust, tshirts, posters etc. could be sold for profits.

The idea is to have a range of products, the bust being the most expensive, then the tshirt and mugs at a mid range and the hardcopy of the comic at the bottom. This idea came from my friend Miu who runs his own shop and brand named Still House, chatting with him he suggested that : as a brand, there should be a range of products that could allow anyone from a student to an established adult to jump on the wagon.

Reflection

For the printed version I have encountered a problem very later on: that I found out the most vibrant neon papers only were colored one side. Due to that I only could only side with a lime piece of paper that was closes to a neon green.

Print shop/ factory production should’ve been considered. Like the Yuujin lesson I have learnt weeks ago, I have put too much faith in my ability to produce a mock up, but what I should’ve done earlier was to consult fitting experts on the matter.

Last Concerns Before Final Distribution

The political environment is sounding and looking bleak, more arrests of past publicists regarding National Security have been shown on the news everyday.

For submission for this course, I feel safe for all the precausions I have taken to assure that I do not offend the new laws, yet to put the material online I do hesitate a little bit at the moment. After turning the full issue 1 to the school, I would need to take a good look in to the content of issue 1 and reconsider if more changes to the story would need to be made.

Although there was mentioning of AirDrop distribution, but to be honest I am not willing to go there just to get my work out in to the public and risk an arrest, the story does kick start with kids starting a riot against adults afterall. Again, an idea I had 12 years ago before all the turmoil occured in 2019.
